The Free Medical Clinic was started by Dr. Chuck Costea in 1981. Each week, 40-60 patients are seen in the clinic on Saturdays by Dr. Costea, his partner, Dr. Wetzel, and a dozen medical students from the Wayne State School of Medicine. For the elderly, working poor and homeless, the clinic serves as the place of their primary care. Diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, malnutrition, hypertension, AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are common among the patients, as are injuries related to violence and the elements. The clinic distributes free prescription drugs, samples donated from the pharmaceutical companies, plus administers medical tests and other procedures. Its hours of operation are: Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. It is located in the Activity Center at 3745 Cass Ave, at the corner of Cass & Selden.
